Now, when winter has officially asserted itself but while the temperatures are mild, it’s still not too late to choose a car battery you can trust. Pneuexpert, one of Microinvest’s partners, has already prepared its stocks for the cold season and is ready to reveal all the secrets of buying a car battery that is fully worth the investment and that you can take without fear, even for long journeys.

By what criteria do we choose the car battery?

Even if it seems to be a universal element, not every car battery fits all car models. They are distinguished by size, model, capacity, price category and, of course, manufacturer. In addition, every car and driver have their own demands when it comes to performance and quality. That’s why it’s important to make a responsible decision and do your research early.

The most common question about batteries is “When do we know we need a new one?” The answer is simple when you feel that your car is starting slower than usual. In general, the estimated lifespan of a car battery can be up to 5 years if you choose a quality model and take into account all operating conditions.

To make sure you’re making the right choice, here are the technical parameters you should keep in mind:

  1. Dimensions and compatibility with the car model. A predictable but very important rule. Although at first glance all car batteries look the same, they differ in size. In general, they can be divided into two large categories: European and Asian. Details of the model and dimensions suitable for your car can be found in the car’s technical documents. So, before you head off to the store, don’t forget to take a peek at the user manual or ask a consultant for advice.
  2. Installation mode and terminal location (polarity). Manufacturers recommend that we turn to specialized installation services if we want the battery to work without problems for many years in a row. If you still decide to install it individually, it is important to consider all the installation steps. As a rule, European models are attached with plates at the bottom, while Asian models are attached with a frame. Our advice is to see how the old battery is fixed or consult the user manual. Regarding the location of the terminals, they may have direct or reverse polarity.
  3. Manufacturer and model. Experts say that the most suitable brand of battery is the one mentioned by the car manufacturer. However, you can also choose a different brand according to your personal preference, which should meet the requirements. Some of the most popular models are Varta, Bosch, Gigawatt, Safa, Duracell, Energizer, etc. You can also choose between models: with maintenance (which can be charged with electrolyte) or with encapsulation. The latter is more efficient in terms of safety and does not require special maintenance.
  4. Capacity and cranking amps. The capacity of a battery is the time it can operate at full power. It ranges from 35Ah to 100Ah. The higher the coefficient, the more the battery will work without charging. By the way, this detail is especially important in the cold months. In this case, it is also recommended to opt for the capacity mentioned by the car manufacturers. In addition to the maximum capacity, we also have the reserve capacity (RC), which tells us how long the battery can use the minimum voltage in case of failure or shutdown. Here the standard coefficient is 1.5 – 2h. And of course – the cranking amps. This parameter directly determines how easily and quickly the car will start. The higher the current, the “snappier” the car will start.
  5. Production date and warranty. Why is it important to know the production date? Because the battery life begins when it has been produced and not when it has been purchased. This is indicated directly on the battery: the letters indicate the month (A-L), and the numbers – the year (0-9) of production. A good battery should have a maximum of 6 months from production and a warranty. The longer the warranty is, the surer you can be that you have made the right choice.

The list can be continued with other recommendations, our partners are great specialists in everything related to car equipping for a whole year.
