Dumitru Vataman’s story proves that age is not an obstacle to big ambitions. A young entrepreneur, Microinvest client, and founder of Vataman Barbershop, he shares in this interview his journey – from the first steps in his profession and the motivation to start his own business, to overcoming challenges and shaping plans for the future. Discover how he managed to turn an idea into a successful and progressive business with the support of Microinvest.
How did the idea of opening a barbershop come about, and what was the main motivator for starting this journey?
I started working in this field when I was 18. In search of better specialists and new knowledge, I decided to move to Romania and study there. That experience opened my eyes and inspired me to one day bring the same level of quality to Moldova – to give clients more than just a service, but to create a special atmosphere for them. During the pandemic, I returned home and started working in the industry again, but by then I already had a clear business plan in mind. Over time, I realized I was ready to bring it to life. It wasn’t easy, but in 2022 I opened the doors of my own barbershop – Vataman Barbershop.
Dumitru, what role did Microinvest play in making this decision?
When I began searching for the missing funds to launch the business, I approached several financial institutions. Everywhere I faced either refusals or advice not to take risks and abandon the idea. Then, a friend recommended Microinvest – and that became the turning point. The Microinvest team listened to me carefully, analyzed my project, and gave a positive response in the shortest possible time. Thanks to their financing, I was able to purchase the necessary equipment for the barbershop and launch the business. I am grateful to Microinvest for believing in me. I still have many plans, and I am confident that with such a reliable partner, I will achieve them.
How many locations do you currently have?
Today, we operate three locations: two in Chișinău, in the Riscani and Botanica districts, and one in Vatra. We make sure that every client, regardless of which barbershop they visit, enjoys the same high level of service and the unique atmosphere that Vataman Barbershop is known for.
What services do you offer your clients?
Vataman Barbershop is a space where men feel confident and comfortable. We offer haircuts of any complexity, beard care and styling, eyebrow shaping, hair treatments, and epilation. We pay special attention to quality: we work only with trusted brands and use therapeutic facial masks that not only care for the skin but also help clients relax after a stressful day.
What has been the biggest challenge for you in business, and how did you overcome it?
I think many entrepreneurs will understand me: the biggest challenge was the lack of enough qualified specialists. This seriously slowed down the development of the barbershop at the pace I envisioned. That’s when I decided to invest time and effort into training. I brought in young people without experience and taught them from scratch, step by step turning them into professionals. Today, they are part of my team and the foundation of the service of which we are proud.
Why do you think clients should choose your barbershop?
First, it’s about attitude and atmosphere. Vataman Barbershop has its own special vibe that makes clients feel comfortable from the very first minute. Secondly, it’s the quality of work and the personalized approach: we select the style and solution that best highlight each client’s individuality. And of course – the details. We offer guests coffee and other drinks on the house, and sometimes the barber even becomes a bit of a psychologist – someone with whom you can easily talk about anything.
Do you still work as a barber yourself or does running the business take up all your time?
From time to time, I still cut hair – mostly for the joy of it, to keep my hands in practice. But as an owner, I understand there is a choice: either dedicate yourself fully to clients or invest your time and energy in growing the business. I chose the latter, because behind me there is a team of specialists who believe in me and count on me to lead the company forward.
Despite your young age, you decided to start your own business in Moldova. What qualities do you consider essential for a successful entrepreneur?
An entrepreneur must enjoy what they do and be able to take responsibility for their decisions. I relate closely to the saying, “not postponing until tomorrow what you can accomplish today” – it perfectly applies to entrepreneurship. From this comes discipline, which helps you keep moving forward and never stand still. In my view, it’s exactly this combination that shapes a successful and forward-looking entrepreneur.
