“High-performance technology is an essential aspect of the agricultural business” – Artur Lesco, farmer, Microinvest client

While some decide to go abroad in search of new opportunities, there are people who choose to stay at home and contribute to local development. VALENAGRO COM is an example of a Moldovan agricultural business that has shown significant progress in just a decade and continues to grow with confidence, developing agriculture in Moldova and providing jobs here at home. Founded in 2014, the company started its operations on 1,000 hectares and today manages an area of 10,000 hectares, focusing on key crops such as rapeseed, autumn wheat, sunflower, maize and sorghum.

The company’s representative, Artur Lesco, a Microinvest client, talked about the significant social impact that a well-managed agricultural business can have, the evolution of the company throughout this period, the innovative technologies adopted to streamline agricultural operations, and the importance of high-performance machinery in this sector. We also discussed the challenges and risks encountered in agriculture, as well as working with Microinvest to ensure financing and sustainable business development.

How has the company evolved since its inception and what are the main agricultural crops you focus on?

VALENAGRO COM was founded in 2014, operating on an initial area of 1,000 hectares. Our main activity is focused on the processing of agricultural land in several localities of the Floresti district. We primarily concentrate on staple crops such as rapeseed and winter wheat, as well as sunflower, corn, and sorghum. Over the past 10 years, we have managed to expand considerably, reaching an area of 10,000 hectares.

What innovative technologies have you integrated into your business in recent years and how have they contributed to the efficiency of your farm work?

At VALENAGRO COM, we are always up to date with the latest innovations and actively implement them in our operations. A few years ago, we started using CAS 32 liquid fertilizer, which involved the purchase of special equipment for its efficient application to meet the specific requirements of each crop. We also regularly use fungicides and insecticides for plant protection. In the near future, we also plan to adapt the “no-till” technology, which will minimize soil disturbances and contribute to the conservation of water and soil resources.

How important is it to have efficient machinery in the agricultural sector, and to what extent does it influence efficiency?

High-performance technology is key to progress in farming. We are equipped with high-capacity tractors ranging from 155 to 400 horsepower, as well as 36-meter self-propelled seed drills. This combination of advanced technology and high working speed is crucial to achieving the desired efficiency. With this equipment, we can operate quickly and efficiently, allowing us to increase working speed and efficiency by up to 50%. This not only improves productivity but also ensures strict adherence to advanced farming technologies for a good and fruitful harvest.

What are the main challenges and uncertainties in agriculture?

Agriculture is a risky sector, as 2023 has shown, with price fluctuations of up to 40% compared to 2022, arising from very high costs. However, there are also very good years when prices are favorable and profits are commensurate. This area requires prudent management, including building up a reserve fund, as profits and losses can vary significantly from year to year. The agricultural sector is also influenced by climatic as well as political conditions and is vulnerable to natural disasters that can affect the harvest. For young people who want to start a farming business, I recommend being aware of these challenges and taking on some responsibility, learning to manage risks to ensure the long-term sustainability of the business.

If you had the opportunity to go back to 2014, would you still choose agriculture?

Yes, I would definitely make the same choice. Investing in a farming business is not just about financial resources; it also involves human resources. By developing this sector, we contribute significantly to the creation of new jobs, allowing people to stay at home in Moldova. Given that our country is predominantly agrarian, with around 80% of the territory dedicated to agriculture, it is essential to harness these resources. So, even with the knowledge I have now, I would opt again for a farming business, seeing it not only as an opportunity for economic development but also as a means of supporting the local community.

How has working with Microinvest contributed to the success and development of the VALENAGRO COM business?

Our collaboration with Microinvest has been and continues to be very positive and effective for the development of our business. I can confidently say that Microinvest is a professional and loyal company, and we have always been satisfied with the financial services provided. As disciplined borrowers, we have paid all loans on time, which has helped to form a long-lasting relationship. We particularly appreciate the possibility of obtaining loans without collateral, up to the amount of MDL 3 500 000, a valuable financial product, especially when fast financing is essential to save the harvest in certain unforeseen circumstances.

*Microinvest is the only financial organization in Moldova that holds the GOLD international certificate in the field of client protection. This implies a responsible and transparent lending process, fair and clear financing, and a constructive approach to any request.
